US101 and Willow Road Photosimulations CalTrans, San Luis Obispo County, California POITRA Visual provided photo-realistic simulations for the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) US101 Willow Road Interchange design project. The proposed interchange will provide highway access for an upgraded Willow Road. The interchange will serve existing farm industries and future development in San Luis Obispo County. An interim design called for a new frontage road on the south side of US101 running east from Willow Road. The frontage road will remain as part of the final interchange configuration. Visualization simulations were needed for public and agency outreach and for inclusion in environmental documents. The Engineer elected to use a series of photosimulations.

POITRA artists plotted the proposed Willow Road onto an Engineer provided photograph from preliminary design plans. Proposed laneage, fill slopes, the Nipoma Creek bridge and automobiles were added. Existing foreground trees were removed as needed to accomodate the new fill and interchange ramps. This work was finished using traditional digital painting techniques. POITRA modelers created the interchange overpass structure, retaining walls and ramps using 3D modeling methods. The previous bridge and roadway design experience of the POITRA Visual principals always plays a significant role in accurately interpreting and representing the Engineer's design. The final simulations were used as meeting materials for CalTrans public involvement process and in the final documents. « BACK
