Roadway level simulations were used because the project team needed to evaluate the aesthetic qualities of each option. The wall alternative would show MSE panel treatments, the viaduct alternative would include bell topped pier columns and box girders, and both alternatives would include landscaping. The Engineer provided photograph required intense work to remove buildings and trees in the path of SR4 which revealed preveously unseen areas beyond.

We like the ground cover (colorful) and believe it is fairly consistent with other CalTrans projects and their landscaping.”

The project was at a very conceptual study level and there was little available to guide the look of wall treatments and landscapeing that needed to appear in simulations. POITRA was asked to develop these elements in the simulation based upon our its experience in urban design.
POITRA modelers constructed an accurate 3D site model for each alternative which included the viaduct and piers, walls, MSE panels and abutments and even markers for proposed landscaping elements.
POITRA relied upon its principal's previous career experience in bridge and highway design to follow design plans and complete the model from concept level plans.
The site models were then camera matched, lighted, rendered and composited with the base photograph to create a visual simulation for each alternative. The final simulations were finished using traditional digital image editing techniques.
POITRA graphic artists designed presentation boards for each alternative. The finished simulations were used in stakeholder meetings.
