RTD FasTracks, Thornton, Colorado The North Metro Corridor is one of several proposed transit corridors in the Denver Regional Transportation District's (RTD) FasTracks program that have been evaluated throughout the Metro area as Environmental Impact Statements (EIS). Most of the corridors originate in downtown Denver's Union Terminal (DUT) and radiate out to the suburbs. POITRA Visual has provided several types of services on nearly all of these corridors at some point in their long histories.* The North Metro Corridor takes advantage of abandoned or little used freight rail corridors that served Denver's northern suburbs. Because of the length of the line and possible interaction with commercial freight rail, a heavy commuter rail concept was proposed. Only Electric Multiple Units (EMU) were being evaluated at this stage of the project. |

The North Metro line separated Rocky Top Middle School from a significant part of the students it serves. A safe method for students to cross the corridor was required. One of the options offered was a pedestrian over-crossing. The project needed to present and assess the visual impact of the proposed facility on the adjacent neighborhood. Photo-simulations proved to be the best medium for nearby residents to accurately evaluate the visual impacts. The view used for this simulation was selected from survey photographs made by POITRA photographers.
POITRA then constructed an accurate and detailed 3D computer model of the proposed steel truss bridge, ADA access ramps and stairs. Since the project only described the crossing in the vague terms, POITRA drew upon its principal's previous career experience in bridge and highway design to complete the project. The model was given the proper truss depth, practical concrete ramp spans and column sizes, code compliant railings with a durable powder coated finish. The layout was re-oriented to minimize some of the ice removal problems encountered in Colorado winters and the stairs were offset from the bridge as a safety precaution. POITRA was also responsible for the architectural features including the roof and the color schemes. POITRA modelers added the completed bridge model to a 3D site model containing the corridor elements such as the EMU catenary system. The site model was then camera matched, lighted, rendered and composited with the base photograph to create the photo-realistic visual simulation. Graphic artists at POITRA designed poster sized displays to be printed and used at open-house style public meetings.
The finished simulations were used in meetings with Fastracks meetings with the City of Thornton, Rocky Top Middle School and residents. Images were also used on the project website, in newsletters and in the EIS document. |
