I-5 over the Calaveras River Photosimulations

CalTrans, Stockton, California

POITRA Visual provided photo-realistic simulations for the I-5 North Stockton Corridor Project, which studied the I-5 Corridor through Stockton, California to make capacity improvements. The project resulted in highway widenings throughout the I-5 corridor, several interchange redesigns, and two new interchanges.

Several alternates to increase the capacity of I-5 were proposed in the study. The simulations at the Calaveras River were created to illustrate these alternates at a major bridge structure. The images were created using an Engineer provided background photograph of the existing conditions.

POITRA Visual also provided a series of 3d graphic cross-sections to further describe the modifications in study documents.

POITRA artists plotted the additional lanes in the median from concept plans. Using traditional digital painting techniques POITRA added the bridge widening between structures, proposed laneage, barriers and additional automobiles. All of the widening occured within existing right-of-way.

A series of graphic cross-sections that further explained the arrangement of the additional lanes in comparrison with the existing and also covered construction staging issues were also created by POITRA.

POITRA relied upon the past bridge and highway design experience of its principals to interpret the Engineer's plans and to ensure the accuracy of the finished simulation and cross-sections.

The final images were used in internal California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) design sessions and for public meeting displays.end of article
