SR4 at the BNSF Railroad Photosimulations

Caltrans, Stockton, California

The SR4 Crosstown Freeway Extension for the San Joaquin Council of Governments, CalTrans and the City of Stockton, continued SR4 from it's previous termination at Fresno Avenue over the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) RR to Navy Drive and the Port of Stockton. The project looked at a viaduct option and an Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) wall option.

POITRA was asked to prepare a series of visual simulations to address anticipated visual impact and design concerns from public and local government stakeholders. Photo-simulation was the obvious medium for accurate and convincing presentations.

Track level simulations were used because the project team needed to evaluate the aesthetic qualities of each option. The viaduct alternative would include bell topped pier columns and box girders and the wall alternative would show MSE panel treatments. A BNSF container train needed to be added to the base photograph for scale referance as the Engineer could not catch one during the site visit.

POITRA modelers constructed an accurate 3D site model for each alternative which included the viaduct and piers, walls, MSE panels and abutments. Using POITRA 3D Stock Models, locomotives and container racks were placed on the existing rail line under the proposed viaduct.

POITRA relied upon its principal's previous career experience in bridge and highway design to follow design plans and complete the model from concept level plans.

The site models were then camera matched, lighted, rendered and composited with the base photograph to create a visual simulation for each alternative. The same was done for the train exept that it was also used in the existing view. The final simulations were finished using traditional digital image editing techniques.

POITRA graphic artists designed presentation boards for each alternative. The finished simulations were used in stakeholder meetings. end of article
