Craigin Intermodal Facility Northeast Photosimulations

Union Pacific Railroad, Craigin, Illinois

The Union Pacific Railroad's (UPRR) Department of Industrial Development wished to expand the railroad's capacity for intermodal container traffic in the northern midwest. The expansion began with site selection in the Chicago area for an intermodal facility dubbed Global Three. Numerous potential sites were identified and conceptually designed for evaluation. POITRA was selected to provide support for this task which included visual simulation and public outreach.

The Craigin site would re-purpose several industrial propeties near Chicago. It would serve as a rail port for Union Pacific customers shipping to destinations in the northeastern United States and eastern Canada with access to eastern partner railroads.

Goodwill with area businesses and local administrators was important to UPRR. A display was needed to quickly convey the site layout and show it in context within existing industrial uses during planning discussions.

POITRA photographers made an aerial photo survey of the site by helocopter from which the simulation base photograph was to be selected. The Railroad decided on two views from oposite ends of the site because of the length of the facility and supply tracks. The view from the Northeast was closest to the container storage area.

UPRR provided preliminary CADD site plans for the proposed facility which were perspective matched to the aerial base photograph. POITRA then painted the areas of layout using it's experience visiting similar existing facilities. Truck runways were rendered in concrete and auto parking in asphalt using digital painting methods. All rail, roadway and parking striping were added in the same manner. The layout was populated with POITRA 3D stock model railroad equipment.

POITRA Visual has had plenty of experience working with rail intermodal facilities and it's principals have actual railroad bridge design experience. The simulation process is always much more efficient when the artists are familiar with the industry and can add the detail that makes the simulation believable. This detail is often far beyond the information that the Railroad can provide at the conceptual stage of development.

A finished display board designed by POITRA was delivered as a printed mounted panel to UPRR staff members for their use with area residents and local goverment authorities. end of article
